Goal

Our Friendly Visiting Program grew out of our Meal Delivery Program, as we grew to realize that a visit can be as important as a meal! The loss of friends, siblings, and spouses can leave a senior feeling isolated. Poor health or poor mobility can restrict a senior's ability to get out and maintain social connections. Through the Friendly Visiting Program, we are able to offer our seniors opportunities for interaction that include visiting, social-recreational activities, gentle exercise, or lunch with a volunteer in their own homes.
Description

Caledon Meals on Wheels needs Volunteer Visitors to visit seniors in Bolton, Caledon, and Orangeville areas:

  • Volunteers will visit with a client in client's home on a weekly basis (in certain circumstances, telephone chats may be an alternative way to visit)
  • Volunteers are asked to commit to ONE HOUR PER WEEK
  • A visit could include talking, social-recreational activities, gentle exercise, or lunch

Benefits

Volunteer Visiting is a great way to meet new people, other volunteers and clients, and make a difference in the lives of those that would benefit from a visit. It is an excellent introductory volunteering opportunity for those interested in a career related to caregiving for older adults.
Qualifications

  • Minimum Age -18
  • You're friendly, engaging, conversational, plus you care about keeping seniors 'connected' to their local community
  • Your oral English is excellent (fluency in other languages welcome)
  • Since this is mainly an 'in person' volunteering opportunity, you have ongoing access to a reliable form of transportation in the Bolton/Caledon/Orangeville areas
  • You're available for the next 4 to 6 MONTHS, and you're able and committed to keep an agreed volunteering schedule (see TIME COMMITMENT, below)
  • CMOW requires a Police Vulnerable Sector Check of all our volunteers (because you'll be helping seniors), and we can help you with that process
  • Visiting a senior requires Proof of Vaccination

SCREENING of applicants will be remote/virtual (Tel/Email/Online interviewing) unless otherwise advised.

Time Commitment
This is a Medium Term (4 - 6 months) commitment
Shifts are available on the following days
 - Monday Morning, Monday Afternoon, Tuesday Morning, Tuesday Afternoon, Wednesday Morning, Wednesday Afternoon, Thursday Morning, Thursday Afternoon, Friday Morning, Friday Afternoon

FLEXIBLE (WEEKLY, Monday through Friday, mornings/afternoons): Anticipated is one visit per week, for 1 hour, precise schedule worked out with our Program Supervisor and the senior(s) assigned. ALSO, monthly 'check ins' with CMOW (usually by phone), plus ongoing TRAINING (refresh) and support.

 

***No virtual, evening or weekend programs available.
Training

ORIENTATION and TRAINING provided to successful candidates. The CMOW's Program Coordinator will accompany Volunteer to the first visit with client.

Yearly refresher training.
