Description
Volunteers will lead open and closed support groups for individuals who have experienced a loss of a loved one. Please see below for more details.

The 'role' of 'Grief Peer Support Facilitator' is multi-faceted, and for the duration of COVID-19, Peer support groups are held in an online format:
- Establish and maintain physical and emotional and social/cultural safety
- Provide socio-emotional support and connect group members with additional resources
- Promote, initiate and guide interactions that are characterized by equality and non-judgment
- 'Role model' in the expression of authentic emotion and respectful, empathetic interactions
- Listen empathetically by giving your full attention to the speaker
- Journey alongside members as they navigate their grief and mourn the loss of their loved one
- Reassure group members of the individual nature of grief
- Observe group members expressions and reactions
- Identify, intervene and help to resolve conflict
- Explore opportunities for growth and change

Goal
We are a non-profit, charitable organization offering compassion and care for individuals coping with the death of a loved one. We provide mutual support programs and services for families and individuals experiencing grief. Our goal is to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where participants leave feeling heard, validated and are equipped with sufficient coping strategies.

We are currently recruiting 'Grief Support Facilitators' for our support groups. OUR PROGRAMS will be 'VIRTUAL' for the duration of COVID-19, and we hope to be ready to return to 'in person' group and individual support as soon as COVID-19 restrictions have eased.

Position Qualifications
● All Facilitators must be 18 years of age or older
● Fluency in language(s) besides ENGLISH is an asset
● For the 'Closed Groups', we ask our Facilitators to COMMIT to EIGHT (8) WEEKS, in order to provide group members with consistency and continuity
● The ideal 'Facilitator' will have experienced a loss and will be able to share that lived experience in a positive manner with group members
● Be able to demonstrate the following traits: compassion, social inclusion, integrity, non-judgment, adaptability, self-disclosure, resiliency, and self-management
● A 'Police Vulnerable Sector Check' will be required prior to facilitating your first group
● Applicants must commit to an online and in-class/'virtual' volunteer facilitator training if selected as a successful candidate
● Facilitators must have reliable access to the Internet via suitable devices (PC, laptop, etc.) and software (eg. ZOOM, Microsoft Teams, etc.)
● Absolute respect for privacy/confidentiality

FLEXIBLE hours to meet volunteer schedules. Groups run for 1.5 hours on a weekly basis.

Training
We run our training QUARTERLY.

INTRODUCTORY TRAINING is MANDATORY for all volunteer 'Facilitators' to complete:
> 7.5 hours of online, independent learning specific to the Centre for Grief & Healing
> 7.5 hours of in-class or 'virtual' learning (THIS INCLUDES a review of organizational policies & procedures specific to the Centre for Grief & Healing
> 2 peer support group shadow sessions
> 1 co-lead of a peer support group session
> 1 lead of a peer support group session

ONGOING TRAINING:
- Existing volunteers will be offered ongoing training opportunities annually
- 'Volunteer Engagement Nights' will be held QUARTERLY; volunteers must attend AT LEAST ONE (1) volunteer engagement night per year
- The 'Topic of the Night' for the volunteer engagement nights are derived from initial training components, such that these discussions will serve as 'refresher' training for all our volunteers
