Goal

Shelter Movers provides moving and storage services at no cost to individuals and families fleeing abuse. We are the only service of this kind in Canada, and our volunteers are no less exceptional. Every year, in collaboration with community partners, our volunteer teams contribute over 15,000 hours to support people transitioning to lives free of violence and abuse.Currently, in Peel Region, Toronto, and York Region, we are moving an average of 40 families a month. We are looking for compassionate people to join our dynamic, dedicated volunteer team.


Description

Our Client Services & Move Coordinator is an integral part of the Operations team, planning and coordinating all details of the move and being on-call support on the day of a move. The Client Services & Move Coordinator ensures volunteer teams are assembled and that moves go smoothly, including responding to and problem-solving unforeseen challenges.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reach out to the client within 24 hours of being assigned the move to confirm all details based on the Ongoing Moves, explain next steps and address any questions/concerns from the client
  • Communicate with Lead Move Coordinators and Scheduling Team members to secure appropriate volunteers
  • Coordinate move logistics, including (but not limited to) vehicle reservations, storage arrangements, and scheduling of private security or police
  • Create a personalized itinerary for the move, detailing all information required by volunteers and share required information with other parties involved (i.e. client, referral agency, security)
  • Be 'on call' throughout the duration of the move to support the Lead Mover with any unexpected challenges
  • Use patience, empathy, and active listening skills in serving clients and volunteers
  • Have regular check-ins with Shelter Movers staff
  • Follow the Move Coordination Manual
  • Report back to Lead Move Coordinator and Move Coordination Supervisor after each move

Qualifications

  • Minimum Age - 18
  • Volunteer Engagement - Minimum of 1 year (see TIME COMMITMENT, below)
  • Available to attend mandatory ORIENTATION & TRAINING (see TRAINING, below)
  • Resume required (see DESCRIPTION, above)
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills (fluency in other languages is an asset)
  • No education that may relate to this 'role' is required
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds is an asset
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and reliable work habits
  • Strong ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Tact, discretion, high maturity level and good judgment
  • Awareness of appropriate boundaries, compassion fatigue, and self-care
  • Ability to demonstrate strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Patience, empathy, and active listening skills
  • Ability to remain calm during potentially stressful situations
  • Reliable access to email and phone
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and provide trauma-informed care to clients
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge and understanding of Shelter Movers’ policies and procedures
  • A passion for Shelter Movers’ mission of supporting women and children fleeing violence and abuse
  • A long-term interest in the Violence Against Women (VAW) sector an asset
  • Experience in social services and the Violence Against Women (VAW) sector is an asset
  • Police Check required

SCREENING of applicants will be virtual/remote, unless otherwise advised (Telephone/Email/Online interviewing), with successful candidates required to sign a confidentiality agreement and comply with other requirements outlined above. Time Commitment
This is a Long Term (More than 6 months) commitment
Shifts are available Anytime

MINIMUM VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENT - 1 YEAR, coordinating at least 2 moves per month, and there is a PROBATION PERIOD of 2 months (3 moves) for this 'role'.
It takes approximately 6 - 8 hours per week for each move coordination.
Please note: Move coordination is task-based. It isn’t performed in a single continuous ‘shift’, given that it involves communication and responding to messages while you are actively coordinating a move.


Training

ALL VOLUNTEERS receive mandatory 2-hour Trauma-Informed Care ORIENTATION designed to train our volunteers for the role. Topics include: Appropriate Boundaries, Violence Against Women, Gender-Based Violence, Trauma-Informed Care, Barriers to Leaving an Abusive Relationship, Anti-Oppressive Practice, and more.

TRAINING: Our Move Coordinators receive additional administrative and 'role' specific training.

TRAINING sessions are held virtually, via Zoom.
