Goal

Journey Thrift is a non-profit secondhand store located in Brampton's downtown. Our store supports The Journey Neighbourhood Centre, which serves the Ardglen and Orenda neighbourhoods of Brampton. By accepting and selling gently-used goods, we generate income that contributes directly to the development and implementation of the services provided by The Journey Neighbourhood Centre.

We are currently looking for a 'Social Media' Assistant, a capable, committed volunteer to help develop and grow our 'social media' presence so that we can extend our reach and connect with a wider audience within Peel region and particularly in Brampton.

Description

  • The ideal candidate for this role will have experience creating and managing 'social media' for Facebook and Instagram (TikTok is a plus) 
  • Experience with marketing, promotion, branding, and/or customer service is also a huge asset
  • This volunteer role will have flexible hours and be on an “as needed” basis, but volunteer applicants should be prepared to commit to the 'role' on an on-going basis
  • Some in-store hours will be required (to take photos, etc.), but content creation and management of 'social media' accounts can happen off-site
  • The 'Social Media' Assistant will coordinate with the store manager to cultivate and put out high quality 'social media' content that reflects the Journey Thrift store and its related organizations
  • Volunteer candidates should be community-minded and feel passionately about giving back to the community
  • Kindness, compassion, diversity, and respect are hugely important values for Journey Thrift, and our 'social media' should reflect these

Qualifications

  • You have a genuine interest in charitable work and you enjoy giving back to your local Brampton community
  • Excellent English oral/written communication skills
  • You're a self-starter, able to volunteer independently, plus capable of organizing and managing Journey Thrift's 'social media' platforms
  • Prior experience with creating and managing 'branded', relevant, and attractive ('eye-catching') 'social media' content on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok
  • Experience in marketing & promotion and/or customer service is an asset
  • Resume is required (a 'portfolio' of your prior involvement in 'social media' will also be helpful)
  • Reliable access to the Internet, plus devices/software (incl. a digital camera) that are suitable for the 'role'
  • Creative mindset, combined with great collaboration skills, a 'team player'
  • Project-oriented', you're respectful of deadlines for ongoing tasks and special projects
  • To promote continuity, a MINIMUM 6 MONTHS volunteering engagement is required
  • You're able to commit to a MINIMUM 1 to 3 HOURS WEEKLY volunteering time

Shifts are available Anytime

FLEXIBLE:  Journey Thrift store hours are 10am-5pm, Tuesday-Friday and 10am-3pm on Saturdays. Because a good portion of the volunteer engagement will be virtual, a fair number of hours can be done outside of store hours from the volunteer's residence, subject to ongoing tasks and deadlines for special projects.



Training

The ideal volunteer applicant should come with some 'social media' content creation and platform management skills, such that as our 'Social Media' Assistant, you will be able to collaborate with the Journey Thrift manager to generate and manage content.

The successful candidate will be asked to come tour the store space as part of ORIENTATION and be expected to regularly visit the thrift store in order to take photos, meet with the store manager as needed, and become familiar with the Journey Thrift environment.

All relevant 'social media' account information will be shared with the successful candidate.
