Seniors Life Enhancement Centres (SLEC) provides caregiver respite by promoting and enriching the lives of adults with physical and/or cognitive challenges through health and recreational services personalized to the needs of our clients and their families. Our motto is 'Transforming Lives Through Purposeful Living'. Everyday, our dedicated team of staff and volunteers contribute to the quality of life of our clients. During COVID-19, volunteers engage virtually (remotely) with the seniors whom we assist. SLEC is funded through the Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network (MH LHIN).

Seniors Life Enhancement Centres (SLEC) is currently looking to fill THREE (3) Board vacancies. Please see the DESCRIPTION and QUALIFICATIONS, below, for deatails about this leadership volunteering opportunity.


Governance Structure

Seniors Life Enhancement Centres (SLEC) is overseen by a 10 member community volunteer Board of Directors that is elected in accordance with its bylaws (a Board member serves for a TWO (2) year term, and is entitled to stand for re-election twice). Board members are selected based on their skills, expertise and desire to support the work of the organization. The Board provides leadership, sets the strategic direction and priorities for SLEC. The Board is accountable to its clients, funders, the community and donors.  It's also accountable for appointing the Executive Director (ED) to achieve SLEC’s goals.  The Board oversees SLEC’s strategic direction and the performance of the ED, who in turn is responsible for implementing the strategic direction and daily operations.

  • Client and Caregiver Satisfaction: To provide a high-quality service that is client centred and driven with a high level of satisfaction and to maintain client independence through health and recreational services.
  • Safety: To deliver services in a safe environment 
  • Employee Conscious: To have a high performing staff team and general employee satisfaction
  • Use of funds and compliance: To achieve the mandates of service set out by the Funder and provide quality service that makes effective and efficient use of funds
  • Partnerships and Collaboration: Working with partners to create a seamless health care system for our clients and their families

SPECIFIC SKILLS/EXPERIENCE: An ideal candidate will have ONE (or more) of these:

  • Legal expertise
  • General administrative experience
  • Fundraising or marketing expertise
  • Board governance, strategic planning, and quality/performance measurement experience


Board Director Competencies
The Board collectively is to have representation with expertise in:
> Strategic management
> Accounting and Finance
Communications, Fundraising, or Marketing
Human resources
Quality and risk management
Legal expertise
Knowledge of the not-for-profit sector and its regulatory environment
Knowledge of issues affecting the seniors’ community, health system, and the people served by SLEC 

Governance Experience
It is preferred that new Directors have prior Board/governance experience, but this is not required. It is essential that Board Director applicants understand the responsibilities of being a Board member and have the necessary experience to contribute to Board decision-making and oversight.

SCREENING of suitable applicants during COVID-19 will be 'virtual' (remote): Telephone/Email/Online interview(s). Suitable candidates will be comfortable conducting 'virtual' communication during COVID-19, plus have reliable access to the Internet and appropriate devices/software.

Time Commitment
This is a Long Term (More than 6 months) commitment
Shifts are available Anytime

  1. Board members will commit themselves to contribute to the organization by attending and actively participating in all Board and committee meetings (membership with at least ONE (1) committee is required)
  2. Attend SLEC client and caregiver social events from time to time

    The Board meetings are on a set schedule of approximately 6 regular meetings (monthly or bi-monthly) on Monday’s from approximately 6 to 8 pm as well as an AGM.  Meetings take place at SLEC located at 2030 Bristol Circle, Oakville. During COVID-19, meetings will be held 'VIRTUALLY', in order to adhere to current Public Health requirements.  Board work is supported by Board committees which focus on governance, nominations, development, quality, finance and risk. In addition, Board Members serve on a Board committee and attend 2 strategic focused meetings annually.

    TERM of Board Membership > TWO (2) YEARS (with entitlement to stand for re-election twice)


ORIENTATION by way of an introduction to SLEC and its Board will be provided, with TRAINING as needed for this leadership role
