Goal

Certified Listeners is a not-for-profit community service organization, built by people who are dedicated to providing early-stage emotional support to anyone who needs it, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. While not a 'crisis helpline', we believe that assisting in the community by means of personal support, helping residents navigate life's challenges by means of early-stage and real-time interventions, we help eveyone make better mental health lifetstyle choices that enhance and make for happier, healthier lives. Within our core program during the Pandemic, the COVID-19 Volunteer Chat Responder assumes a key volunteering role. If you believe that you are an empathetic, strong communicator, ready and able to be there for those whom we assist and support, this 'role' is yours to explore and fill! We are reaching out in particular to residents of BRAMPTON to join us as volunteers.

This is an opportunity to volunteer from home. Reporting to the Certified Listener Program Manager, all volunteers are carefully screened and fully trained before taking emotional support chats. Throughout their volunteering experience, volunteers receive ongoing professional support and in-service education sessions. Experienced volunteers gain many life and communication skills which translate into other aspects of their daily lives. 


Description

Our COVID-19 Volunteer Chat Responders provide emotional support on our online chat platform, the specifics of which are:  

  • Provide immediate and confidential support (chat, etc.) while adhering to agency procedures and policies
  • Provide information and referrals when appropriate
  • Understand what to do if you are concerned about a person’s safety
  • Work with callers/chatters, volunteers, and staff in a respectful and professional manner
  • Above all, letting callers know that you're listening, that someone cares, and that you are there to provide individual support

Volunteer Chat Responders DO NOT:

  • function as professional therapists, being sure to not hold themselves out to be same, expressly or by impression
  • counsel callers as to what they should do, or as to how to live their lives
  • engage in crisis intervention OR addiction counselling

Qualifications

  • While not absolutely required, for this 'role', we are reaching into the BRAMPTON community for volunteers
  • Strong oral/WRITTEN English communication skills (fluency in additional languages welcome)
  • Working knowledge of local Peel (Brampton) community services, notably those that relate to the 'role', including resources that address 'domestic violence' will be helpful, not required
  • Regular, reliable access to the Internet and devices (PC, Laptop, etc., with appropriate software) that will facilitate your 'virtual' communication in the 'role' (ie. 'chat room' participation, video conferencing, etc.)
  • You are comfortable and confident in volunteering using 'virtual' (remote) communications, and you possess a typing skill of 40 WPM or close to it
  • You are committed to volunteering that embraces 'diversity and inclusiveness' in your local community, plus ready to assist our clients who are from diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds
  • You are an empathetic listener, capable of working well under pressure, and someone who has good judgment when it comes to conflict management and resolution
  • You are prepared to follow our organization's 'Policies & Procedures', including adherence to absolute confidentiality
  • Available for 20 hours of mandatory training, with a corresponding commitment to a mutually agreed schedule over an engagement of 4 to 6 months, preferrably longer
  • 'Police Vulnerable Sector Check' required (due to the sensitivity of this 'position')

Time Commitment
This is a Medium Term (4 - 6 months) commitment
Shifts are available Anytime

FLEXIBLE: With a weekly minimum of THREE (3) 4-hour shifts per week (12 hours overall). Six 'shifts' to choose from.

We are asking for an engagement of 4 months or more (depending upon COVID-19 needs and duration of the Pandemic)



Training

MANDATORY: Training that will be "virtual" (remote) and you will need 20 hours to complete all aspects, at your own pace. Beyond that, you initially will be 'shadowed' by an experienced supervisor or staff.
