MICBA Forum Italia Community Services (Forum Italia) operates a Supportive Housing Program with the purpose of providing Attendant Services to seniors 65 and over in permanent community residential settings when their support service needs require the availability of 24-hour, on-site assistance. The role of any Supportive Housing program is to provide an alternative to Long Term Care facilities while maintaining people’s independence and integration into their communities. Ours is a multicultural initiative that has matured into an established presence, highly regarded in the community that we serve. We have always recognized the challenges that older adults (especially seniors 65+) face in terms of being isolated within their communities, and in feeling genuinely lonely. Such isolation and loneliness often lead to physical and emotional health issues that seriously compromise a senior's enjoyment of life.Given the physical restrictions of COVID-19, we have adapted our highly successful volunteering role: 'Friendly Visiting Volunteer' to a 'virtual' approach: Friendly Visiting - Friendly Phone Calls or 'Virtual' Visiting, and we seek volunteers who will purposefully engage and socialize with our seniors on a continuous basis. Volunteers will be carefully paired with residents based on language (see Qualifications, below) or cultural background to assist with accessibility and language barriers that prevent them from participating in social programs. Our volunteers, even remotely, will give our seniors individually feelings of belonging and purpose, and the belief that they matter, and next to nothing compares with that!

After careful screening of your volunteer application (see Qualifications, below), you will be 'matched' to at least one senior whom Forum Italia believes is most compatible and suitable. Working with staff, how you will 'connect virtually' (eg. phone, online visually) will be determined and a weekly schedule will be set, having regard to the senior's needs, preferences, and to your availability (see Time Commitment, below).

An orientation about how you introduce yourself to your 'match', with suggested topics for conversation, will be provided (incl. reminiscing/story telling). Volunteers are encouraged to be faithful to their call schedule, plus both prepared, engaging, and empathetic. Visiting in a friendly way is easier than you think, and we'll help you 'break the ice'!

Volunteers also are asked to listen closely to the needs and interests of their seniors, so that you can be imaginative and creative about your conversation and suggestions for mutual activities. We will ask you to respect the privacy and confidentiality of those whom you assist, while telling us of any concerns that you may have about your 'match' (especially ongoing health, essential needs, etc.) Administratively, you will track your time volunteering through 'Volunteer Impact' (details to be provided).

PLEASE APPLY AT YOUR EARLIEST OPPORTUNITY. Easily access the Forum Italia online volunteer application process by creating a volunteer 'profile' with Volunteer MBC, then 'click' the yellow box 'Apply Now!', (above/below). You may also access the website directly (see Social Media, below). Thank you!
