Position: 2856 - Meals On Wheels Delivery Driver - solo or in pairs [URGENT]

Goal

VON Canada is a national, not-for-profit, charitable home and community care organization. For more than 115 years, our nurses, therapists and other health care providers have cared for Canadians in their own homes. Today, we offer more than 75 home care, personal support, and community services designed to help people of all ages to get healthy and stay healthy. Our team of more than 5,000 staff and 9,000 volunteers serves Canadians in more than 1,200 communities across our country. Deliver hot and/or frozen nutritious meals to our client's home, and in doing so contribute towards sustaining the health of VON clients. DURING the COVID-19 Emergency, strict HEALTH & SAFETY procedures will be followed, including 'contactless delivery'.

If you an early retiree, even an 'older adult' (55+) without pre-existing conditions that have you classified as 'vulnerable' in a pandemic, engaging with the VON may be a great way to help respond to the COVID-19 Emergency. We are very receptive to your applying to join this worthwhile program for a long-term engagement (at least 6 months, preferably for 1 year) that will impact your fellow residents directly.



Description

[ PLEASE NOTE: Volunteer applications are being accepted, with 'virtual' screening. Interested volunteers should apply ASAP. ]

CORE TASKING: Deliver hot and/or frozen meals to individuals who cannot prepare food themselves or bulk delivery to seniors community programs. In doing so volunteers will maintain confidentiality of route sheets, report concerns to the supervisor regarding the well-being of the clients, attend in-service training as arranged by the site. Clients are primarily seniors.

  • In January, scheduling is taking place on a weekly basis, and upon your application, we will provide details
  • Deliveries are designed to be 'CONTACTLESS', strictly observing COVID-19 restrictions
  • This position is ideal for individuals as well as friends or family members to volunteer together!
  • The minimum volunteer engagement commitment is 6 MONTHS, and we invite early retirees (55+) in good health to consider volunteering for up to 1 year
  • The need for drivers to deliver food is in MISSISSAUGA, South Etobicoke, and Oakville.

Qualifications

  • Volunteer engagement for a MINIMUM of 6 months, preferably well beyond that (see GOAL, above)
  • Valid Class 'G' driver's licence and clean driving record (must provide Driver's Abstract)
  • Access to a reliable, clean motor vehicle (covered by auto insurance, as required by the Province of Ontario)
  • During COVID-19, strict adherence to applicable HEALTH & SAFETY procedures, including 'contactless delivery'
  • Good communication and active listening skills
  • Friendly, outgoing with older adults and persons with disabilities
  • Capacity to remain calm in unexpected situations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to set clear boundaries, respect for privacy, and confidentiality
  • 'Police Vulnerable Sector Check', because you'll be involved with vulnerable seniors

WEEKLY SCHEDULE > The days and delivery times may vary and the schedule will be worked out in advance with each of our volunteers.



Training

One time VON orientation followed by shadowing with a current program volunteer on a route plus ongoing training as required. Dates/times are determined by the Coordinator and volunteer applicants together. During COVID-19, emphasis will be on HEALTH & SAFETY procedures.
