With the public's generosity, in 2019 in Canada: - The Salvation Army provided 5,500 shelter, addictions, detox, and mental health beds for vulnerable men, women, and families in Canada - The Salvation Army served 3.3 million free meals IN PEEL SHELTERS, 'Food Service Volunteers' assist with food services during meal times. Clients are served individually with pre-packaged food until the meal is served to everyone. Our volunteers also have the opportunity to engage in friendly, positive conversations with our clients, building, their spirits and demonstrating that individually and as a team, we care. DURING the COVID-19 Emergency, precautions will be taken and strictly adhered to.


PLEASE NOTE: The food service is catered, so meal prep is not involved. There will be a minor cleanup in the kitchen area after meal is served. SHIFTS last about 2 hours, and you are usually very busy during serving time. COVID-19 Emergency 'physical distincing' protocols will be strictly observed at all times. PEEL SHELTER AND HOUSING SERVICES VOLUNTEER COVID PROTOCOLS First and foremost, thank you for considering to volunteer at The Salvation Army, Peel Shelter and Housing Services. We will be happy to have you as volunteer. We want to assure you that we have been working to ensure that all appropriate measures to safeguard our shelters and that we have existing plans and training protocols in place to warrant they stay that way. We have implemented additional measures to ensure the safety of residents, staff and volunteers returning. The Salvation Army and Region of Peel have implemented recommended procedures and actions, from health authorities, to continuously disinfect and sanitize areas of the shelters with particular focus on high traffic and high contact areas. We have increased the cleaning supports throughout our shelters, including providing gloves, hand sanitizers and masks as well as all spaces frequented by staff and residents.

The TOP PRIORITY of The Salvation Army and Region of Peel is the health and safety of our residents, staff and volunteers. TO ENSURE that The Salvation Army is able to continue its important work in providing care and support to those in need, we are taking as many precautions as we can and working hard to keep all of our facilities as clean and as disinfected as possible. In addition to increased cleaning and disinfecting practices throughout the shelters, we have implemented the following at our facilities: > Adjusted meal-times to enable residents and staff to social distance while waiting for food; (Lunch 12-1:00 pm and Dinner 5-6:00 pm, evening snacks-8:00pm. > Provided additional areas for shelter residents, such as open dorms, etc. to encourage and help implement social distancing among clients. > Educated the residents on social distancing > Wearing masks in a congregate setting We will continue to follow Regional, Provincial, and Federal health authorities' recommended approach for prevention and protection to help ensure the health and safety of our residents, staff, and volunteers. Additional rules for volunteers to comply with at each visit to the shelter: > Volunteer must wear a mask upon entering the shelter building > Volunteer must use hand sanitizer to sanitise hands > Volunteer must complete Covid 19 attestation form each time they come to the shelter > Volunteer must take a temperature test. A thermostat will be pointed close to the forehead. If the reading is 38 Celsius and under, the temperature light will indicate green. (This is okay to resume volunteer work). If the reading is 39 Celsius and over, the light will indicate red. (You must see a doctor before resuming volunteer work).

IF you have or are experiencing the following: > Flu-like symptoms? (fever, cough, sore throat or respiratory issues) > Have travelled anywhere outside of Canada in the last 14 days? > Have been in contact with anyone who has flu like symptoms who has travelled outside of Canada in the past 14 days? If you answer YES to any of these questions, Please do not consider to volunteer at the shelter for now, but contact the Peel Health Line at (905)799-7700, or go to the nearest hospital in your area to get checked. If you are screened positive to COVID-19, we ask that you not proceed with volunteering until you are confirmed by a local medical centre that you are no longer positive and have quarantined yourself for at least FOURTEEN (14) days. You must provide a 'medical note' to that effect in order to be eligible to volunteer. It is the duty of our Peel reion shelters' staff to ensure that EVERYONE strictly follows COVID-19 Emergency HEALTH & SAFETY REGULATIONS and PROTOCOLS.

ONE SHIFT PER WEEK could be assigned to lunch or dinner, must be able to stick to ONE DAY out of the week - 1-2 hours. ongoing until you decide to take a break from volunteering. Lunch starts at 11:45, daily Dinner starts at 4:50 pm, daily Snacks at 8:00 pm, daily We request a 4-6 month commitment from our volunteers, or as long as you continue to enjoy helping. We're open 24/7.


Training and orientation to be provided by Volunteer Manager and Food Service Coordinator
